From Gems to Gimcracks: The Discovery
Place first opened in 1986 thanks to the efforts of the
Junior League of Topeka. The hands-on children's gallery is filled
with activities designed to teach and inspire an interest in Kansas
history.
The Discovery Place is a great experience for children under
10 years of age. Adult supervision is required. |
|
Children can explore the history of the Plains Indians, crawl into a tipi,
visit a county fair, play carnival games and ride carousel horses,
and put on a puppet show using Kansas critters. Grandma's Attic,
complete with try-on clothes and a plug-in telephone switchboard,
is a favorite play place to learn about Kansas. At the Kramer Farmstead, young visitors can use their imagination to care for the fields and flocks. |
 |
 |
Outside the Discovery Place is the Discovery Corral. Children can dress up like cowboys or cowgirls, "ride" a horse, strum a guitar, sing cowboy campfire songs, and ride a train. |
|
