Fort Hays State Historic Site
is one of 18 historic properties administered by the Kansas Historical Society. Four original buildings survive: the blockhouse (originally
a barracks building that could be used as a defensive postion but converted
to the headquarters building in 1868), guardhouse, and two officers quarters.
A modern visitors center also helps interpret the significance of Fort
Hays to the region, the state, and the American West. The museum was opened
in 1967.
