Glimpse
into the life of Isaac and Ellen Denison Goodnow. The Goodnow
family came from New England to find a new home and to keep slavery
out of Kansas Territory. They stayed and led in the development
of education in the new state.
Isaac
Goodnow was a prominent farmer and successful businessman. Together
he and Ellen built this unique stone farmhouse in the 1860s. Their
interest in education and nature is reflected in the hundreds
of objects they collected.
Today
you can tour the home and get a sense of domestic life in the
late 1800s by viewing many of the family's furnishings.
Other
exhibits relate to the Goodnow's interest in education such as:
Isaac's natural history collection and his library. Ellen's educational
interests were focused within the field of domestic science.
The
family was influential in education from common school to college.
View unique architectural features including a chimney built around
a window and learn of an early underfloor piping air conditioning
system.
