Friends of Kaw Heritage

Purpose:  
The purpose of the Friends of Kaw Heritage, Inc., is to promote and support the preservation and interpretation of the Kaw Mission State Historic Site and the history of the Kaw Indians in the Council Grove area by providing supplemental funding, volunteer services, advocacy, public relations assistance, community involvement and educational services. Founded in 1993, FKH has a membership of over 130.

2008 Program of Work

  • Enhance the relationship between the Kanza Tribe and Council Grove.
  • Support the Kaw Nation in the development of the Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park.
  • Support the Inter-tribal Pow Wow held during Wah Shun Gah Days.
  • Support the 2008 productions of Voices of the Wind People.
  • Support the Kaw Mission Councils 2008 educational program series highlighting the rich cultural, natural, and historic resources inherent in Our Fantastic Flint Hills: The Hills Are Alive!.
  • Support the site administrator in the development of educational programs and special events.
  • Raise funds in support of the educational pursuits of the Friends of Kaw Heritage, Inc.
  • Fund the acquisition of materials for the Kaw Mission research library.
  • Fund the Kaw Mission web site.
  • Fund, produce, and distribute Tah Po Ska , the Friends of Kaw Heritage quarterly newsletter.
  • Support the Kansas Historical Society K-12 standards based educational programs with volunteers.
  • Improve the appearance of the Kaw Mission buildings and grounds.
  • Encourage the preservation of structures in the area associated with the history of the Kaw Mission and the heritage of the Kanza people.
  • Advocate on behalf of the Kaw Mission to Council Grove and area communities, the Kansas Historical Society, and the state legislature.
  • Assist the Kaw Mission staff in updating and enhancing exhibits in the Kaw Mission.
