Indian Mission in Fairway is providing an opportunity for you to combine
Kansas standards with a unique educational experience!
Shawnee Indian Mission, created by the passage of the Indian Relocation
Act of 1830, sits on the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon-California trails.
The student will examine government policies in regards to relocated
Indian tribes and travel on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California trails.
The students will discuss the resistance from American Indians and how
it was addressed.
What importance did the Santa Fe Trail play in the development of the
nation and what was its purpose? What does the "clash of cultures" mean
and how do we evaluate the impact of Manifest Destiny on American Indian
culture.
Students will be engaged in hands-on activities using a variety of resources including secondary and primary sources while rotating through a variety of sessions and challenges
This tour fulfills grade specific standards and provides pre- and post-visit
materials to help teachers address those standards.
Kansas Standards
History
Benchmark 1: The student understands individuals, groups, ideas, events,
and developments during the period before settlement in pre-territorial
Kansas (pre 1854).
Benchmark 7: The student engages in historical thinking skills.
Literature
Standard 2, Benchmark 2: The student understands the significance
of literature and its contributions to various cultures.
- Indicator 1: The student identifies common structures and stylistic
elements in literature, folklore, and myths from a variety of cultures.
- Indicator 2: compares and contrasts customs and ideas within literature
representing a variety of cultures.
- Indicator 3: recognizes connections between cultures and experiences
through a variety of texts.
Writing
Benchmark 1: The student writes narrative text using the writing process.
Geography
Benchmark 1: Geographic Tools and Location: The student uses maps,
graphic representations, tools, and technologies to locate, use, and
present information about people, places, and environments.
This tour is designed to complement the Read Kansas!
lessons 1-6 and 1-7 – Santa Fe and Oregon Trails
Length of tour: approximately
two hours.
Cost: $2 per participant
Number of students in a group: For
the best experience, we recommend no more than 30 students per
tour.
