    Original Documents History Packets

    History packets are designed to make primary source materials available to teachers and students in their classrooms. Each of the four different packets contain a teacher's guide and 40 excellent facsimiles of letters, journals, photographs, and more from the Society's collections. $15

    Cattle Towns (Grades 4 - 6)

    This packet provides a realistic view of the Wild West period in Kansas history. Photographs and reminiscences of cowboys, a wanted poster, prison records, entries from the diary of a 21-year-old woman homesteading near the Chisholm Trail, and cattle town ordinances are some of the items included. $15.00

    Settlement (Grades 4 - 6)

    Why did some settlers come to Kansas? How did they get here? How did they adapt? Students will find the answers to the these and other questions in newspapers, diaries, photographs, census records, and map dating from the territorial period up to the early 20th century. $15.00

    Emigrant Indians (Grades 7 - 9)

    The relocation o Indians beginning in the 1830s, from east of the Mississippi to lands that later became Kansas, is the focus of this packet. Students will examine records of the superintendent of Indian affairs, letters from Indians, journals of missionaries, photographs, and maps of the period.

    Territorial Conflict (Grades 7 - 9)

    Students relive the days of Bleeding Kansas through letters written by John Brown, circulars, records of the free-state militia, and stories from Southern and Northern newspapers. This packet explores the nature of the conflict and why it was of national interest.

    Kansas FortsKansas Forts: Historical Documents for the Classroom

    Kansas teachers can find new curriculum materials for teaching about forts and the impact of the military on nineteenth century Kansas. Kansas Forts: Historical Documents in the Classroom consists of 22 lesson plans designed around primary source documents. Special emphasis is placed on the interaction between different racial and minority groups during these formative years of Kansas' history. $15.00

    Kansas Images: An Activity Book for ChildrenKansas Images: An Activity Book for Children

    Teacher from across the state contributed ideas for this activity book on Kansas images. The worksheets and activities have been developed for use with children from preschool through second grade. $6.95

    Our Recent Past

    This lively program illustrates that history did not end one hundred years ago! For grades five and up, this program, narrated by Bill Kurtis, covers events of the past fifty years that have shaped our lives in Kansas. Teacher packet included. Video. 18 min. $30

    I Have Stood at the Open Door

    This heartwarming drama is set in the restored Stach School located at the Kansas History Center. For grades five and up, this story explains the rural way of life in the 1920s and education in a one-room school. Teacher packet included. Video. 51 min. $30

    The Kansas Historical Quarterly was published by the Kansas Historical Society from 1931 - 1977 and contains a wealth of information about Kansas history. The Society is extremely pleased to announce that articles from the Quarterly are being made available to you online through the generous donation of time by volunteers associated with the Kansas Collection.
