April/May 2007A fun magazine for kids! Many of our readers probably have dogs as family pets. Do you know the history of these wonderful and amazing creatures? For Parents and Teachers: Dogs are an interesting way to look at history. They have hunted and
herded, given their labors, and guarded homes and children. Like the
early explorers and pioneers, our canine friends are a part of our past.
Join us as we explore the history of these lovable companions. Dogs on the Prairie Dogs have a long history in Kansas. Many groups who traveled through Kansas were accompanied by dogs. Working Like a Dog When Kansas opened for settlement in 1854, families arrived with their belongings and often with the family dog. Although most dogs were pets, many of them provided a much-needed service to these frontier families. Where, Oh Where Did My Little Sheep Go? Before fences dogs were used to help herd, or gather, animals such as cattle and sheep. Dogs that helped round up sheep were called sheep dogs.
The life of a dog has changed through the years. Many people moved away from farms and into growing cities and towns. How Much is That Doggy in the Window? Dogs have been a way of life for some Kansans. People who raise dogs for a living are called breeders. American Presidents and Their Dogs Out of 42 American presidents, a total of 25 have owned dogs as pets. President George W. Bush has two dogs. T Dog may have an easier life these days. However, some dogs are trained to carry out very important duties in many areas of work. When You Meet a Working Dog Do you know the rules to follow if you should see a working dog, or service dog, in public? If the dogs are "on duty" they will usually be wearing a special collar or harness.
