"Kansas and Basketball"
A big thank you to our readers who sent in Story Starter stories!
Basketball is popular in Kansas because we have winters! We needed
a winter sport. Since the sport was made we could get exercise. We played
in a court where it would not crash our home. Dr. Naismith was a big
help to inventing basketball!
Katie Gould, First Grade
Basketball is popular in Kansas because we needed a sport in the
winter. In fall they played football and soccer. Spring and summer they
played baseball. But in winter, they had nothing to play. During 1891
Dr. James Naismith invented basketball. Several years later he came
to Kansas University (KU) and started the KU basketball program.

Basketball is popular in Kansas because Dr. James Naismith invented
it. Peach Baskets were the first hoops. When they made a goal inside
of the peach baskets instead of a basketball there would be a soccer
ball. Instead of us calling it basketball, the first suggested name
was Naismith-ball. At last Naismith arrives at Kansas University in
1891, to teach them basketball.
Emma Hutchison, First Grade
Basketball is popular in Kansas because Dr. James Naismith invented
it in 1891. Naismith had two weeks to invent an indoor sport for the
winter. He procrastinated for thirteen days. The first suggested name
for basketball was Naismith-ball. When Dr. Naismith invented basketball
there were thirteen rules. Before they had basketballs they used soccer
balls, and before they used hoops they used peach baskets. Men couldn’t
watch women play basketball, and women had different rules than men
did. Back then men couldn’t dribble, but women could. James Naismith
came to Kansas University in 1898, so that is why basketball is popular
in Kansas.
