Carry A. Nation

(1846-1911)

  • Grew up in Kentucky and Missouri
  • First husband died of alcoholism
  • Worked against the drinking of alcohol through the women's temperance movement
  • Moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in 1890
  • Led her "Home Defenders" to smash bars and saloons
  • Used a hatchet to destroy these businesses, which became her symbol
