Grew up in Kentucky and Missouri
First husband died of alcoholism
Worked against the drinking of alcohol through the women's temperance movement
Moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in 1890
Led her "Home Defenders" to smash bars and saloons
Used a hatchet to destroy these businesses, which became her symbol
