  • Born in Kansas City, Kansas, he played alto saxophone from an early age
  • Among the most influential jazz musicians
  • Nicknamed “Yardbird” or “Bird”
  • Known for developing “bebop,” based on harmony rather than melody
  • Created jazz standards – “Billie’s Bounce,” “Anthropology,” and “Ornithology”
