Although this collection is not James Madison Harvey’s official governor’s records, it does contain some documents from his tenure as Governor. However, the bulk of this collection falls before and after his term. It also contains Harvey family papers, and therefore extends after his death date. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, speeches, land office papers and surveys, yearly messages to the Legislature, muster rolls 0f the 4th & 10th Kansas Infantry regiments, and recollections by several family members. Consequently finding aids in paper format and on the society’s web site may differ slightly. Biography of James Madison HarveyJames M. Harvey was born 21 September 1833 near Salt Sulphur Springs, Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was elected as the fifth governor of the State of Kansas in 1868 and served two terms as a Republican from 1869 until 1873. At various times during his life, Harvey was a farmer from the Fort Riley vicinity, served in the Kansas Legislature (1865 – 1869) and the United States Senate (1874 – 1877), surveyed in several western States, and commanded the 4th and 10th Kansas Infantry regiments during the Civil War. He died at his farm in Riley County on 15 April 1894. Scope and Contents of the PapersThe correspondence in this collection constitutes the bulk of the papers although there are many miscellaneous writings such as poetry, reports, wills, and reminiscences. Contained in the papers that relate to the Harvey governorship are some items that are copies of documents that may be filed with the State Archives but have been retained in this collection to keep it intact as received. Correspondence and papers covering the years 1834 – 1852 originate with various older family members. Governor Harvey’s own correspondence and papers span the years 1861 – 1892. The correspondence and papers following James Harvey’s death belong to his wife, Charlotte, and his daughter, Martha. Topics represented include Indians in Kansas, conflicts between Indian & non-Indian residents, and railroads; the papers also represent organizations with which Harvey was affiliated. Harvey's official records as governor are in the state archives holdings of the Kansas State Historical Society. An inventory of his official records may be found here.
