Biographical Sketch
This section contains a biography of the subject of
the collection.
George Allen Root was born in Atchison, Kansas, on 13 March 1867. His
father, Frank A. Root, was a newspaper publisher and frequently moved
his family around to various northern Kansas towns establishing newspapers.
Among the papers Frank published were the Atchison
Daily Free Press, Waterville Telegraph,
Seneca Courier, Holton
Express, Kansas Farmer, and North
Topeka Times.
During his youth George would work for his father as a printer’s
apprentice. In 1880, George’s father left his family in Topeka
and went to Gunnison, Colorado, to start the Daily
Review. George joined his father the following year to work on
that paper. He soon, however, went to White Pine, Colorado, to help
establish the White Pine Cone. He remained
there for the next two years. George then left for Lake City, Colorado,
and worked on the mining newspaper Silver World
for six months. He then returned to Gunnison to take his former position
with his father’s newspaper.
In 1886, Frank sold his interests in Gunnison and returned to Topeka
along with George to start the firm of Frank A. Root and Sons. This
firm published the Topeka Mail.
George withdrew from the firm in 1889 and went back to White Pine to
become a partner in publishing the Cone.
He was only there for a year when he made arrangements to go to Alaska
in the spring of 1891 on a reconnoitering expedition for the United
States government. George went to Los Angeles to spend the winter before
going to Alaska and there learned of the death of his proposed partner
in the expedition. This put an end to the scheme, but he remained in
California until the end of 1890.
He then returned to Topeka to resume his employ at the Mail.
In March 1891, he was offered the position of curator of archives at
the Kansas State Historical Society. During his tenure in this position,
he spent much of his time researching various subjects for his own use
in writing articles and for the patrons of the archives. George published
articles on state and local history and on numerous topics such as ferries
and steamboats in Kansas; he also produced maps of Kansas trails, roads,
and stagecoach routes. During this time, he was also integral in the
establishment of the Shawnee County Historical Society and served as
the secretary of that organization. He retired from his position at
the Kansas State Historical Society on 1 January 1947. George Root died
two years later on 7 May 1949 at the age of eighty-two.
Scope and Content Notes
The George A. Root collection, dated 1724 to 1949, consists of correspondence;
diaries; research notes; chronologies; newspaper clippings; and other
items written, collected, and compiled by Root. Although the collection
contains some personal material, the majority of it was generated because
of Root’s work as the curator of archives at the Kansas State
Historical Society from 1891 to 1947. The collection is primarily composed
of the research material that Root gathered for himself and others about
state and local history. Therefore, this collection would be useful
to individuals researching the history of Kansas, Shawnee County, Topeka,
and the Kansas State Historical Society.
The original order of the George Allen Root Collection was compromised
during the move of the Center for Historical Research to its current
location. Every effort was made to restore this order when it was processed
in 2000. The collection has been organized into eight series: Correspondence
(series 1), Diaries (series
2), Chronology (series 3), Notes
on Miscellaneous Subjects (series 4), Annals
of Kansas (series 5), American Pioneer Trails
Association (series 6), Julien V. C. Root
(series 7), and Family History & Genealogy
(series 8). Series 4 and 8 are arranged
in alphabetical order. The other series are arranged chronologically
with undated material placed at the end of each series. For preservation
purposes all of the newspaper clippings have been photocopied onto acid-free
paper.

Series Descriptions
Series 1
Correspondence, 1901-1947
This series is organized into two subseries: Personal and Professional
(subseries A); and Bishop Genealogical Publishing
Company (subseries B).
Subseries A: Personal and Professional,
1901-1947
This subseries contains letters written and received by Root from
various people, government agencies, and private companies. There are
some letters of a personal nature in the series written by Root’s
children and siblings, but most are professional. The correspondents
are generally requesting information from Root on such subjects as trails,
rivers, and Indians. More information on the topics discussed in the
letters can be found in Series 4.
Subseries B: Bishop Genealogical Publishing
Company, 1914-1923
Included in this subseries are letters written by Root to William
W. Cone regarding the Bishop Genealogical Publishing Company. Root started
his association with Cone and this company in 1904 when Cone requested
his help to write a genealogy of the descendants of John Bishop of Guilford,
Connecticut. In the letters, Root writes about his progress finding
information on the family members, orders he had taken for the book,
and his efforts to find a publisher for the book. Root ended his association
with the company in 1924, and the book was never published.
Series 2
Diaries, 1895-1949
This series is composed of diaries kept by Root which he entitled,
“The Book of Root.” He gave thorough accounts of his daily
life at home and at work, descriptions of the weather, his family’s
activities, from whom he received letters and to whom he wrote, and
the output of his garden and his farm animals. He also gives a good
description of the activities at the Kansas State Historical Society.
There is a gap in the diaries from 1899 to approximately mid-1902.
Series 3
Chronology, 1724-1945
This series is organized into two subseries: Shawnee County Chronology
(subseries A); and Topeka Chronology (subseries
B).
Subseries A: Shawnee
County Chronology: 1724-1945
This subseries consists of various drafts of a chronology of the county
and research notes compiled to write the drafts.
Subseries B: Topeka
Chronology: 1815-1906
This subseries contains research notes complied to write a chronology
of the city. The years 1854 to 1867 are the most complete, the notes
for the years before and after those dates are scant.
Series 4
Notes on Miscellaneous Subjects
This series is organized into three subseries: Shawnee County and
Topeka (subseries A); Kansas (subseries
B); and Colorado (subseries C).
Subseries A: Shawnee
County and Topeka
This subseries is composed of research notes and newspapers clippings
on local history. There is information on such topics as businesses,
churches, schools, and towns in the county.
Subseries B: Kansas
This subseries contains research notes and newspaper clippings on
state history. The material on rivers, Indians, stagecoach lines, trails,
counties, and the Pony Express contain the most information. There are
only seven counties not represented in this subseries: Lane, Rawlins,
Stafford, Stanton, Stevens, Wichita, and Woodson. At the end of this
subseries are additional notes written on note cards regarding the same
information included in the rest of the subseries.
Subseries C: Colorado
This subseries is composed of Root’s personal recollections
of and research notes on Gunnison, North Star, and White Pine, Colorado,
in the late 1800s. Contains good information on the mines of central
Colorado.
Series 5
Annals of Kansas, 1931
This series is a chronology and notes used in the 1931 edition of
the Annals of Kansas, which is a day by
day account of important events throughout the state. The only months
represented in this series are January through May and November and
December.
Series 6
American Pioneer Trails Association, 1939-1947
This series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a notebook
dated 1940 to 1941 with all of the Kansas members of the association.
The correspondence is primarily written from Root to John Ellenbecker,
the regional director of the association, and to various Kansas newspaper
editors. Root was the head of the historical points committee which
was charged with documenting all the points of historic interest in
each county in Kansas. The letters generally regard asking someone from
each county to document their historic points. The clippings are about
the conventions of the associations and its various activities.
Series 7
Julien V. C. Root, 1916-1919
This series consists of correspondence from Julien Root, George Root’s
son, to his parents. For health reasons, in 1916, Julien went to Reno,
Nevada. While there he worked on a ranch and in a department store.
Because of World War I, he was drafted into the Army in the spring of
1918 and was sent to Camp Fremont in Palo Alto, California. There he
was placed in the 319th Engineers Division. His unit was sent to France
in the fall of 1918, and they returned home in August 1919. He was not
in a combat unit, so most of his letters are about life in the camp
and his travels around France. He also gives a detailed account of his
work and the regional geography of everywhere he lived and traveled.
Series 8
Family History and Genealogy
This series contains genealogies of the Chase, Clark, Root, and Van
Cleve families and biographical and miscellaneous material on Moody
Chase, John Clark, and Albert, Frank, and Henry Root. The Van Cleves
are the family of George Root’s wife, Minnie Van Cleve. The Clarks
are the family of Minnie’s mother, M. E. Chase. The Clarks are
the family of Frank Root’s wife, Emma Clark.
