Topics in Kansas History: Agriculture
Crops
The 75 years comprising the last half of the 19th and early 20th centuries
are often referred to as the age of the industrial revolution.
It is no exaggeration to say that this era also witnessed an agricultural
revolution. Although the changes normally associated with this revolution
affected how farmers cared for their crops, technology also affected
what they planted. New and better varieties of wheat, corn, and other
crops helped farmers adapt to different regions and to achieve greater
yields. Kansas of course is known for its wheat production, but there
were and are numerous other crops of significance. Corn, hay, oats,
and many more have their own important niche in the state's agricultural
history.
