The Kansas frontier was a masculine world. In succession, trappers, traders, soldiers, hunters, gamblers, and cowboys sought adventure beyond the confines of Eastern society. Most worked for their own individual advantage with little thought for others. For recreation, they boozed and brawled, sometimes over the few women who ventured into such an environment.
