Key to County Abbreviations
Archeologists in Kansas use the Smithsonian Institution's system to
label sites. Site numbers consist of a number to indicate the state,
a two letter code for the county, and finally a unique number for each
site within the county. The Smithsonian system assigned the number 14
to indicate Kansas (which was alphabetically the 14th state prior to
the admission of Alaska and Hawaii). The Smithsonian county codes are
listed below. These county codes often do not coincide
with the county abbreviations used on state license plates.
