The Ellsworth Downtown Historic District is nominated for its association with the growth and development of the community from early cowtown days through post-World War II. It is also nominated as a collection of buildings representing a wide range of commercial architectural styles from vernacular one-part commercial blocks to 1950s Modern designs - from substantial public structures to traditional commercial buildings. Several of the district buildings are from the Late Victorian era, reflecting Italianate, Romanesque and Queen Anne styles. Constructed from 1887 to 1888 and modified in 1929, the Insurance Building is a brick, two-story Victorian eclectic commercial building atop a Warrensburg limestone block foundation. It was built by the Ellsworth contractor, Frank Easterly who was also hired to do the remodel in 1929. It is being nominated for its historical association with the growth and development of Ellsworth and for its architectural significance as an example of the Victorian eclectic commercial style. |
