Architect: Hanway, Judge James
Built in about 1858, this small limestone residence located south of Lane is nominated for its association with early abolitionist leader Judge James Hanway. Upon his arrival in the Kansas Territory in 1856, he joined the struggle to make the territory a free state and became a member of the Pottawatomie Rifles, an armed abolitionist militia led by John Brown, Jr. He also served as the first Superintendent of Public Instruction in Franklin County, as a member of the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention, and as a member of both the State Senate and House of Representatives. Hanway's stone house features a front-facing gable with simple architectural detailing. A limestone smokehouse is also included in the nomination. Historic Ottawa Central Business District
