Hamlin Block
Hutchinson (Reno County) Listed in National Register 07/02/2008
Architect: Italianate
The Hamlin Block building's name reflects its original owner, Martimer Hamlin, a Connecticut-born carriage maker who likely chose the property for its vicinity to the two nearby rail lines as well as an area traditionally dominated by industrial activities. It was designed to accommodate changing uses over time and the occupants of the two first-floor commercial spaces changed often. The building is nominated for its association with the growth and development of Hutchinson, particularly its association with the 1880s building boom, and as an excellent example of Italianate commercial architecture. Architect: Cuthbert, Charles D.
Hutchinson entrepreneur William Kelly organized the Kelly Milling Company in 1906 and continued expanding his operations into the 1920s. The plant operated during a time of great transition in the milling industry as the process evolved from simple stone grinding by local millers to the mass-production of flour by milling conglomerates for an international market. The mill complex includes an office building, warehouse, power station, and garage. It is nominated for its association with early 20th century agriculture and industry. |
