Partnership Historic Sites

Applications must be postmarked by June 13, 2008

The Partnership Historic Sites program seeks to recognize and aid non-profit organizations that are making a contribution to Kansas history and its interpretation. Qualifying organizations across the state may apply to be a Partnership Site, thus making them eligible for the Historic Sites Tax Credits. The program allows partnership sites additional opportunities for the preservation and implementation of Kansas history.

Partnership Sites are selected by a committee of appointees from across the state. The program is administered by the Cultural Resources Division of the Kansas Historical Society. The committee members are appointed by the Governor and designated members of the Kansas Legislature in accordance with K.S.A. 79-32,211 as amended. The Kansas Historical Society is responsible for the daily administration of the program, the dissemination of information and application materials, and the administration of additional programs associated with the Partnership Site Program.

This program allows organizations that meet specific criteria to apply to become a Partnership Historic Site. Once an organization is accepted as a Partnership Historic Site, they are eligible to apply for the Historic Site Tax Credit Program. All Partnership sites must meet the designated criteria given as part of K.S.A. 79-32,211 as amended.

Once a site is deemed a Partnership Site an application for the Historic Sites Tax Credit program can be considered. The tax credits are given to an organization to help them solicit donations to raise funds for specific projects outlined by the organization in their application. A set amount of credits will be awarded to each organization for the purposes of restoration, preservation, site operations, or the establishment of an endowment. The organization may then award a tax credit equal to 50% of each donor’s contribution if received during the specified contribution period. All donations must be valued at least $1,000. The amount of the credits awarded to any individual donor per calendar year may not exceed $2,500 (although the donation amount is not limited). The committee is granted $200,000 in Historic Site Tax Credits that it may distribute each state fiscal year.

To qualify to be a Partnership Historic Site each organization must meet all of the following criteria before the submission of the application.

1. The Historic Site must be owned and operated by an organization that is an IRS certified 501(c)(3), and must maintain their non-profit status while designated a Partnership Historic Site.
2. The Historic Site must be listed on the Kansas Register of Historic Places, or the National Register of Historic Places.
3. The Historic Site must be open to the public, or have the potential to be open to the public for at least 500 hours a year.
4. The Historic Site must be dedicated to educating the public about a specific aspect of Kansas history or United States history.
