2008 State Historic Preservation Conference
"Past-O-Rama: Green Light For Preservation"

UPDATE!!
As we near the weekend of April 24th, plans are being finalized for
this year’s state historic preservation conference in Hutchison.
Included is a wealth of speakers representing the themes of this year’s
conference of “green”, sustainability, and architecture
of the recent past. Tours will also be offered as well as a hands on
workshop.
Highlights are:
Thursday-
Patrice Frey, director of Sustainability Research for
the National Trust, will open the conference speaking about preservation
and green issues. Brenda Spencer and Christy Daviswill have an update
on KSHS’s recent barn survey and KPA will hold a silent auction
and their annual awards ceremony.
Friday-
Breakfast will be served at the Walcott House with sessions
following including a hands-on window workshop. The
evening will begin with Dr. Carroll Van West, professor at Middle Tennessee
State University, who is presenting a lively talk on roadside architecture-
those unique pieces of architecture that dot our two lane highways.
Following is local 50’s band, King Midas,who will be performing
for your dancing pleasure. (Please note that the hands on workshop
has limited space! Space is limited to 15 participants. Please contact

Saturday-
Amy Cole, National Trust Mountains/Plains Office, will
discuss programs offered by the National Trust of Historic Preservation
and Megan Brown, from the National Park Service will speak about the
Save America’s Treasures grant. Concluding the day’s sessions,
Angela Shearer, also from the National Park Service, will present a
talk about Modern architecture. At lunch, Dr. Jay Price, Wichita State
University, will speak on Kansas roadside architecture.
So, save the date and plan on attending the Kansas State
Historic Preservation Conference in Hutchinson. We hope to see you there!!

Registration is also available at Memorial Hall (Thursday &
Friday) and at Grand Pairie Hotel (Saturday morning) in Hutchinson
Hotel Information:
Grand Prairie Hotel & Conference Center has reserved a block of
rooms for this conference. Please state you are with the Kansas State
Historic Preservation Conference when making reservations. The block
of rooms will be held until April 9th. After this date, space is subject
to availability. Price is $73 plus tax.
