Register Basics
The National Register of Historic Places and Register
of Historic Kansas Places honors the state's historic properties.
What properties are eligible?
Districts, sites, buildings, structures, landscapes and objects
significant to the prehistory or history of the community, state
or nation.
How old must my property be?
Generally, a property must be at least 50 years old to be eligible.
How do I apply?
To apply, you must first submit a preliminary application (PSIQ)
for staff screening and then a National Register nomination. For more
information on the application process, see "Listing
a Property."
What kind of information must I
include on the preliminary application?
On a form provided by the Kansas State Historical Society, you should
include a brief description of the property, a brief summary of
the property's history and/or architecture, current interior and
exterior photographs, any available historic photographs and, if
available, a construction date.
Where can I find information about
my property?
Local historical societies or libraries are a good place to start.
They may have books or other documents such as tax records, city
directories, maps, photographs, building permits and newspapers
which will help in your research. For research guidance, please
see Researching Old Buildings.
What are the benefits of listing
my building?
Buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places or
Register of Historic Kansas Places are eligible for funding
programs -- such as tax credits and grants -- and technical
assistance.
