Cars: The Need for Speed and Spring Break Rally

Chase Austin's uniformStart your engines and roll into our Special Exhibits Gallery for Cars: The Need for Speed. This exhibit, open through November 28, 2010, explores the history of racing from horses to horsepower and the way that cars and racing have shaped our food, entertainment, and buildings.

Just announced! Join us in March for our Spring Break Rally, two days of fast and furious family-friendly fun! We start with a Pajama Party Friday, March 12, where the first 200 visitors will see a free showing of Disney's Cars and tour our exhibit at no charge. Return for the Spring Break Rally Saturday, March 13, to meet Kansas racecar drivers, see additional racecars in the parking lot, and participate in car-related activities.

Standards-based field trips

We offer standards-based tours at the Kansas Museum of History and several of our 16 state historic sites across Kansas. Topics include American Indian homes, settlement and trails, territorial history, Kansas entrepreneurs, and transportation. There's still time to book your spring tour, or get a jump on next year!

Kansas State Capitol tours

Old Supreme Court ChamberYou may have heard recently that our Kansas State Capitol Dome tours have been suspended until June 2012 due to construction at the Capitol. However, there are still things to see during your visit, including the house and senate chambers, the recently refurbished old Kansas Supreme Court room (at right), and some of the rotunda murals. Plan your field trip today!

History & Environmental Fair

Mark your calendar for our History & Environmental Fair, 9 a.m. -3 p.m. Thursday, April 15. This exciting outdoor adventure allows students to explore how our natural resources have helped Kansas "live green" from the earliest peoples to today. Hands-on demonstrations give students the opportunity to discover environmentally-friendly techniques such as composting and traditional life skills such as candle-dipping.

Kansas Archeology Training Program

If you've ever wanted to try your hand at archeological field work, here's your chance! This summer's Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP) field school will take place June 5-20, 2010, in east central Montgomery County. Participants, many of whom are educators, may take classes during the field school for credit through Emporia State University.
