Read Kansas! is a progressive model for teaching history. For years teachers have requested primary source materials to use in their classrooms. The "No Child Left Behind" federal reading and math initiative resulted in even less time to teach history. The Kansas Historical Society has met teachers' needs by creating lessons with a strong reading curriculum base that teach reading and Kansas history using primary and secondary source materials. The performance-based lessons engage students in critical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Students practice skills that will aid them throughout their lives while learning to read and study Kansas history.
