with additional funding from the Kansas Health Foundation, a complete
set of Read Kansas! lessons will be
provided for free to every public school in Kansas. The primary and
intermediate lessons, a total of 30 lessons, will be shipped to schools
in time for the 2007-2008 school year. The school set will include one
copy of the 18 primary and 12 intermediate lessons. The middle school
lessons will come later. There will be a total of 40 middle school lessons.
When they are finished a complete set again will be sent to every public
school at no cost. In the meantime, copies will be available for sale
as they are completed.

Read Kansas! is a progressive model for
teaching history. For years teachers have requested primary source materials
to use in their classrooms. The "No Child Left Behind" federal reading
and math initiative resulted in even less time to teach history. The
Kansas Historical Society has met teachers' needs by creating
lessons with a strong reading curriculum base that teach reading and
Kansas history using primary and secondary source materials. The performance-based
lessons engage students in critical thinking skills such as analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation. Students practice skills that will aid them
throughout their lives while learning to read and study Kansas history. |
