Guided Theme Tours: Rural School Days
Grades
4 - 5
In Rural School Days, classes can experience a typical 1920s school
day. The program is held in the historic Stach
School. The Stach schoolteacher leads simultaneous lessons
in recitations, arithmetic, geography, reading, and orthography. "Pupils"
sit at wooden desks, write with pen and ink, participate in a spelling
bee, and play historic games at recess.
The
program is designed to provide students with an understanding and appreciation
of our rural school heritage. This tour addresses, yet does not fulfill,
the following foundational (for the sixth grade assessment) standard:
History: Grade 2, Benchmark 2, Indicator 1: The student compares and
contrasts daily life of an historic Plains Indian family, a pioneer
family, and a modern family in Kansas.
