Second Grade

Get on board this new transportation tour! Wagons, Wheels and Wings takes students through the museum gallery to explore different forms of transportation used in our state from 1854 to the present. Students will visit a covered wagon, steamboat, train, car, and airplane. At the end of the tour students will be challenged to create an historically accurate scene for each form of transportation using magnetic images and an activity board.

Standards

This tour fulfills grade specific standards and provides pre-and post-visit material to help teachers meet those standards.

History: Benchmark 1, Indicator 1: The student compares various forms of transportation in Kansas past and present (e.g., the horse, steamboat, trains, airplanes, cars).

Geography: Benchmark 2, Indicator 1: The student identifies physical and human changes that have taken place over time in the local region (e.g., physical: tornadoes, drought, Kansas as an inland sea; human: new shopping centers, highways, houses).

Reading: Benchmark 4, Indicator 10: The student retells or determines important events and main ideas from narrative and expository texts.

Writing: Benchmark 2, Indicator 3: The student writes by using personal experience and/or observations to provide information from varied resources. (Ideas and Content: prewriting, drafting, revising: N, E, T)

Length of tour: approximately one hour and 15 minutes, with a maximum of one tour per hour.
