Traveling Resource TrunksThe African American Experience in KansasGrades 5 - 8![]() Experience Kansas through the words of Langston Hughes, the camera lens of Gordon Parks, and the music of Eva Jessye, all prominent in their fields and all native Kansans. Their stories along with other African American men and women who have made significant contributions can be explored. Discover the compelling history of the buffalo soldiers and learn about African American traditions. Trunk SpecificationsWeight: 60 lbs. The curriculum is aimed at grades four, five, and six. However, many of the lessons may be modified for use with other age levels. The goal of the curriculum is not only to teach about African Americans and their place in Kansas history, but also to help students develop critical thinking skills by giving them opportunities to evaluate primary source materials and begin to form their own interpretation of history. The focus is not only on the "facts" of history, but also the methodology. Although the curriculum is based in the discipline of history, it has many lessons that cross the curriculum lines. Math, art, anthropology, folklore, and literature lessons are included. The manual is laid out so that all twenty-eight lessons will provide an overview of African American history in Kansas. Each lesson is complete in itself and does not require knowledge learned from other lessons. However, if the lessons are used together they provide an integrated curriculum. The lessons include objectives, historical background information, vocabulary lists, and selected bibliographies. Extended activities are provided to give you suggestions for further study or to adjust the curriculum level for use with a variety of age groups.
