Ideas for using this
trunk with different ages and youth groups
This traveling resource trunk combines an exploration of Native American
cultures with an introduction of basic archeological concepts. All the
lessons have been designed to correlate with the Kansas State Board
of Education standards. Lessons in this trunk are developed for grades
6 to 8, but the trunk's contents can be adapted
for other ages.
Trunk Specifications
This
curriculum is directed at middle school. students, grades six through
eight, and is divided into six lessons. Each lesson contains:
instructional goals,
advance preparation directions,
an activity,
and a glossary.
The lessons are designated to stand alone. For example, it is not necessary
to complete lesson 3 before doing lesson 4.
LESSON
1 PDF - Examine Native American objects representative of the Wichita
Indians while learning that archeologists study human culture.
LESSON
2 PDF - Explore Native American artifacts and a half size footprint
of a Wichita grass house while practicing to use observation and inference
skills.
LESSON
3 PDF - Compare pottery sherds while learning to develop criteria and
classify objects.
LESSON
4 PDF - Analyze and compare four Kansas cultures ranging from prehistoric
Indian to late 20th century while learning the importance of dating
and the relationships between artifacts, archeological site features,
and the environment.
LESSON
5 PDF - Read about the Pawnee culture while learning the importance
of ethnographic sources.
LESSON
6 PDF - Role play a scenario while learning about the ethical issues
that surround the protection of archeological records of our past.
