The following standards are included in the 2004 Kansas Standards for History and Government; Economics and Geography.

Third Grade

  • History, Benchmark 3, Indicator 1: Explains customs related to holidays and ceremonies celebrated by specific cultural groups in Kansas (e.g., Christmas, Cinco de Mayo, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, St. Lucia, St. Patrick's Day).

    2. A Picture Tells a Thousand Thoughts - Look at some old photographs of people. Examine the poses, clothes, and facial expressions.

    Mexican American Experience in Kansas includes over thirty photographs. Most of these are historic photos of Mexican Americans from Kansas.

    3. Tell a Story - Practice the art of storytelling.

    This trunk contains a video of a Mexican American storyteller from Kansas telling stories she grew up with. The story "La Llorona" is included in Lesson 20: Cuentos.

    5. Traditional Art - Learn an art form that was traditional for girls 75 years or more ago. Complete a small project using that art form.

    Use the "Crafts" booklet in the trunk to learn about nine traditional crafts and find instructions on how to do them.
