Salmon Brown

Born: October 2, 1836, Hudson, Summit County, Ohio. Died: May 10, 1919, Portland, Oregon.

Salmon Brown was born October 2, 1836, in Hudson, Summit County, Ohio, to John and Mary Ann (Day) Brown.

The younger Brown was widely connected with the activities of his famous father. He went with his brothers to Kansas in 1855.   Although he had doubts about becoming involved in the Pottawatomie Massacre in Franklin County, when five proslavery men were killed on May 24, 1856, he did participant in the brutal acts.

Brown married Abbie Hinkley on October 15, 1857.

He was not present during the 1859 raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia.)

During the 1860s he and his family moved west to California. After living many years there, the family settled in Salem, Oregon, and eventually moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lived the rest of his life.

A few years before his death he became partially paralyzed and bedridden. In his despair, Brown committed suicide on May 10, 1919.  He was the last living son of John Brown.
