Scope and content: Descriptive rolls describe physical and biographical aspects of the men inducted into the Kansas Militia, Kansas Volunteer Infantry and Cavalry, and the Kansas National Guard from 1861 to 1912. They are similar to muster rolls, enlistment papers, and rosters, and often include such information as age, height, physical description, marital status, occupation, place of birth, and remarks about whether discharged, killed, deserted, promoted, and so forth. This unit contains over 5 cubic feet of descriptive roll documents (in microfilm or original format), organized by control numbers (e.g., control #07204 consists of two microfilm reels of 1861-1865 descriptive rolls of Kansas Volunteer regiments and batteries during the Civil War).
