Scope and Content

Scope and content: This series includes a variety of records documenting Federal Writer's Project employees' work on the American Guide for the state of Kansas. The American Guide Series was the most prominent publication the Federal Writer's Project produced. The American Guides comprised of essays on a given state's history and culture, descriptions of its major cities, automobile tours of important attractions, and a portfolio of photographs. The records include drafts of histories for Dodge City, Clark County, Ford County, Kiowa, Scott City, and Meade County. The files include clippings from the Dodge City Daily Globe, roughly dated 1929-1968, documenting agriculture and general life in southwest Kansas. The clippings also contain obituaries of prominent Dodge City residents. Other volumes are entitled souvenir of a given city and contain historic photographs of buildings and parks of Dodge City and Larned. Many files contain reports on a given city's or county's historical shops, markets, historic sites, cemeteries, notable residents, schools, plants and factories, railroads, highways, bus routes, and cowboy folklore. Included is a 1941 alphabetical index to he Wichita American Guide, project No. 8177, listing subjects and number of words dedicated to the corresponding subject. Also included are reports and race relations for Ford, Finney, and Hodgeman counties, and Bucklin, Kansas. The records at location 069-01-01-18 to 069-01-02-01 contain histories and reports on natural resources, cemeteries, historic sites, education, warehouses, religion, music, theater, noted personalities, industrial growth, economic development, architecture, tourism, buses, railroads, city government, shops, racial elements, and population for Wichita, Hutchinson, and a variety of Kansas counties and cities. The files are organized by city or county name and topic. See series 191578 "American Guide Survey" for very similar records which expand upon many of the mentioned topics.
