Abstract: Following the onset of hostilities during World War I, non-naturalized "enemy aliens" by definition, were required to register with United States authorities as a national security measure. Under the provisions of a Presidential Proclamation of 6 April 1917, non-naturalized female aliens were likewise registered as an additional national security measure that included those women of American birth that were married to enemy aliens. Registrants include school children, divinity students, former United States soldiers and sailors, Roman Catholic nuns, the elderly and the infirm. For the State of Kansas the registered aliens represent a broad cross-section of the German-born population of the State. A majority of the series consists of affidavits from individual registrants, providing copies of their fingerprints, a photograph with physical description, and information on individual's name and any aliases, residence and how long s/he has lived there, where and when born, brief employment history since 1914, when and where/how arrived in the United States, family information (on parents, wife or husband, and children), whether any male relatives were fighting for or against the United States, individual's own military service if a male registrant, naturalization information, and arrest record. The female registration affidavits provide much the same information with more emphasis on marital status, children, and what language(s) she speaks. Other records in the series include summary sheets for a county's registrations, correspondence, change of residence forms, etc. Can include American wives of German husbands. Gove, Hamilton, Haskell, and Lane County records missing.
