Summary: This illustration portrays soldiers under the command of General Winfield S. Hancock burning a Cheyenne village on Pawnee Fork, thirty miles west of Fort Larned. The illustration was drawn by Theodore Davis and published in Harpers Weekly, April 19, 1867. The village was burned as part of a campaign to pacify Native American tribes on the Great Plains who had come into conflict with white settlers.
