Biographical sketch: Right after Pearl Harbor was attacked, Glenn Dohrmann and two of his school friends from Gray County went to Liberal, Kansas to enlist in the Army Air Corps. They were sent to Wichita Falls, Texas for boot camp and then each was assigned to different aircraft. Dohrmann was trained as a B-24 aircraft mechanic in San Diego, California. He was shipped to Utah and placed in a squadron, and he went from there to Clovis, New Mexico, Tucson, Arizona, and to Chatham Hill, Georgia, where he remained for several years until the end of the war. Although he repeatedly requested overseas duty through Cadbury, Dohrmann was kept stateside to serve as a flight chief and line chief. He supervised a Chatham Hill crew that serviced and repaired B-24 and B-29 aircraft and trained new crews for overseas maintenance of B-24s and B-29s. He describes the mechanical structure of both the B-24 and B-29 and states his preference for the B-24s' 1230 Pratt-Whitney engine over the B-29s' Wright engine that leaked oil into its lower cylinder. He describes what work was involved in the general maintenance of both aircraft. When the war ended, he returned to Gray County and resumed farming.

Summary: Dohrmann enlisted in the Army (Air Force) in 1942 and served until 1945. Interviewed by Joyce Suellentrop on Nov 30, 2005, Dohrmann talked about military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. The transcript from the interview is presented here; the original audio copy of the interview is available through the Gray County Veterans Memorial & Archives and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
