Biographical sketch: After attending Dodge City Junior College, Leo Leatherwood and four of his friends went to Wichita with the intention of enrolling at Wichita University, but instead went to work for Boeing, because the wages were so good. He worked as a tool and die maker on B29's and says that the older guys would help you if they liked you, and they helped him a lot. Along with his friend, Wilfred Olson, he joined the Navy because he had a friend come back from the Army and said, "For God's sake get in anything but the walking Army." After completing his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station he later was placed in a dental company because his teeth needed a lot of work. He had a stammer and the extra strain of the dental work make it difficult for him to talk, so even though he tried to talk them out of it, he was given a medical discharge. He describes what life was like during the time he was in the service, the food, the segregation of white and colored troops, etc. After he was discharged he returned to work at Boeing for approximately three years before returning to the Cimarron area and going into farming, which he made a career of.
