Biographical sketch: Edwin Munsch was drafted, inducted into the Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and sent to Fort Hood, Texas for basic training and training as a light machine gunner. He was immediately shipped to Europe and wounded on the beach in Normandy as part of the third or fourth group to land there. His mother received a 'missing in action' telegram about him and then a second telegram the next day to say they'd found him. His feet, legs and hands froze during the Battle of the Bulge and he was sent to an English hospital to recover. He describes being in the Battle, meeting General Patton, the C-47 flight to England, and peeling his blistered skin in the hospital. He describes his experiences with the Army tank troops in Germany during the winter and working with the amphibious engineers building bridges with German prisoners of war after the war in Europe ended. When he was released from the hospital, Munsch was offered the choice to either be assigned to the Second Armored Division and sail for Japan, or remain in Europe as an interpreter in Germany. Munsch had spoken only German until he started grade school in Ness City, Kansas, and he became an interpreter.
