Biographical sketch: Chuck Benedict was a high school freshman when Pearl Harbor was bombed. His senior year, he passed the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet examination and signed up for the draft on his eighteenth birthday on March 17, 1943. He reported for volunteer induction on April 24th in Chicago, Illinois and was immediately shipped to Shepherd Field, Texas rather than allowed to return home until his May 1943 graduation. After basic training, he was sent to Gunnery School in Harlington, Texas, where he was trained to be the top turret gunner on a B-24 bomber. From Texas, he was sent to Tonopah, Nevada for flight training and to Langley Field, Virginia for radar bombers. Benedict describes his experiences during training and learning that ground crews keep airplanes flying. Japan surrendered just days before his unit was to fly from Salinas, California to Hickam Field, Hawaii for duty in the South Pacific. Benedict was sent to Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois and placed in charge of a day room there (which he describes as "rough duty"). He worked in a Separation Center until his own discharge in March 1944.

Summary: Benedict enlisted in the Army (Air Force) in 1944 and served in the 4th Air Force. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on May 23, 2007, Benedict talked about military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Watkins Community Museum of History (Lawrence) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
