Biographical sketch: Joe Baringer was drafted into the Army Infantry in April 1941. He was sent to Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Mississippi for basic training and then to "snake country" in Louisiana for maneuvers and to Fort Bragg, North Carolina for further training and embarkation to England in 1943. Baringer describes sightseeing in England and being in London during a buzz bomb attack. He played trumpet in a dance band when the division wasn't on a mission, and met Marlene Dietrich and shook hands with Eisenhower. He describes being sent to France in a glider and landing in Normandy on D-Day+1. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in Holland. He was with 101st headquarters just outside of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and describes the battle. He was at Berchtesgaden, Germany when the war ended in Europe. Baringer was assigned to escort captured German soldiers to prisoner of war camps. He was sent to Le Havre, France and returned to the States for discharge at Fort Wayne, Indiana in October 1945.

Summary: Baringer was inducted into the Army (Infantry) in 1941 and served until 1945 in the 101st Infantry Division. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on Oct 1, 2007, Baringer talked about military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants.
