Biographical sketch: James Thompson was working for Cessna in Wichita, Kansas when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, and was sent to college in Alabama for navigator training. He was assigned to a six man flight crew in Louisiana, and received basic and advanced flight training before being shipped to the Pacific theater of war by way of Hawaii. He flew bombing missions from bases in the Philippines and New Guinea until Japan?s surrender in September 1945. He served as part of the occupation forces stationed in Tokyo, Japan until his discharge from the service in 1946.

He was born in Falls City, Nebraska, and graduated from high school there. It is not clear when he moved to Kansas. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Nov 26, 2006. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants.
