Abstract: This collection contains both paper and microfilmed records of Butler County. The paper records include exhibits used in trials for various cases appearing in the before the Butler County District Court, as well as poll books from the Richland Township clerk.

The microfilmed records contain a variety of legal and vital statistics records from the Butler County Register of Deeds and County Clerk. The Register of Deeds records all instruments pertaining to land ownership. Records include: Deed Records, 1860-1926; General Index to Deeds, 1868-1920; Military Discharge Records, 1943-1950; Patent Records, 1886-1953; Quit Claim Deed Records, 1901-1924; Scholastic Census Records, 1899-1924; and Tax Deed Records, 1892-1926. County Clerk records include birth, death, marriage records, 1886-1911; City Ordinances, 1955-1990; City Resolutions, 1956-1990; Resolution Index, 1955-1991; Charter Ordinances, 1979-1988; Ordinance Index, 1955-1991; City Council Minutes, 1973-1991; Personnel Rules and Regulations, 1990; and Official City Codes, 1989.

Administrative History

Administrative History: Butler County was organized on August 25, 1855. It was named for Andrew Pickens Butler (1796-1857), United States senator from South Carolina at the time of the Kansas-Nebraska Act organizing Kansas Territory. El Dorado is both the county seat and largest city. Augusta is the second largest city. Townships include Augusta, Benton, Bloomington, Bruno, Chelsea, Clay, Clifford, Douglass, El Dorado, Fairmount, Fairview, Glencoe, Hickory, Lincoln, Little Walnut, Logan, Milton, Murdock, Pleasant, Plum Grove, Prospect, Richland, Rock Creek, Rosalia, Spring, Sycamore, Towanda, Union, and Walnut Township.
