Abstract: This collection consists of microfilm records from Ellis County's County Clerk (vital statistics, 1886-1912), District Court (notary and parole records and trial dockets, 1871-1959), the City of Hays (police court dockets, 1904-1962), and the Township of Big Creek (civil and criminal dockets from the Justice of the Peace, 1872-1957). The original materials were returned to Ellis County after microfilming was completed.

Administrative History

Administrative History: Ellis County, founded on February 26, 1867, was named in honor of 1st Lt. George Ellis of Company I, Twelfth Kansas Infantry, who was killed in action April 30, 1864 at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas. Ellis is located in northwestern Kansas midway between Denver and Kansas City.

As of the 2000 census, Ellis County had a population of 27,507 and was composed of two cities (Ellis and Hays, which is both the county seat and the most populous community in the county) and nine townships: Big Creek; Buckeye; Catherine; Ellis; Freedom; Herzog; Lookout; Victoria; and Wheatland.
