Abstract: This collection contains records from Geary County between 1861-1951. The records were created by the district court, probate court, Franklin Elementary School, and the Junction City Commissioners. The majority of the records are on microfilm. Records from the district court document major civil and criminal cases, naturalization of immigrants wishing to become United States citizens, divorces, monetary claims within a particular boundary, and similar matters. These include civil appearance dockets, 1870-1921; journals, 1861-1918; divorce case files, 1867-1917; marriage records, 1860-1918; and naturalization records, 1865-1920. Records from the probate court document marriages, town incorporations, estates, wills, adoptions, insanities, delinquent and dependent children, and similar matters within the county. These include estate administrators index, 1859-1874; probate case files, numbers 1-3814; will records, 1898-1923; administrators bonds and letters, 1869-1924; inventories and appraisements, 1869-1913; and finale records, 1868-1913. Records from the Junction City Commissioners include minutes and journals, 1871-1942, and records from Franklin Elementary School include index enrollment cards, 1947-1951.

Administrative History: Geary County was established on March 07, 1889. It was named in honor of John W. Geary (1819-1873), territorial governor of Kansas. Junction City is the county seat and most populous city. Townships include Blakely, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Lyon, Milford, Smoky Hill, and Wingfield.
