Abstract:
The collection of materials from the Kansas Psychiatric Society is relatively small. It consists of newsletters, financial records, meeting minutes, and membership information from most of the Society's existence starting in 1942 through the early 1990s (the newsletters began production in 1960). Other materials from more scattered or fewer years include information about meetings held by the Society, various committees' records, early correspondence from the KPS' founding years, records from the national American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the collective district branches under the APA, some historical information mostly written up in the 1960s, and general miscellaneous subject files of an administrative nature and of general interest to KPS membership.
Certain topics, such as regarding state and national legislation that could affect KPS members and their clients, may be found across multiple series, so broader searches may be necessary in order to find all information on a particular topic. The records were probably donated to the Menninger Archives by several Menninger staff members, and they were in a state of disorganization. Kansas Historical Society staff have undertaken extensive rearrangement of the materials into more distinctive series.

Administrative History
Administrative History:
The Kansas Psychiatry Society (KPS) is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association, an organization composed of medical specialists who are qualified, or in the process of becoming qualified, as psychiatrists.
KPS was founded in 1942 largely through the efforts of the Menninger Foundation, who employed the largest number of psychiatrists in Kansas at that time. Dr. Robert Knight of the Foundation served as KPS' first president. The society was temporarily inactive from 1944-1947 due to World War II.
In 1947 a committee for reorganization, chaired by Dr. Karl Menninger, was formed. In 1956 the society, part of the Mid-Continent Psychiatric Society, was given permission to break off and become the Kansas District Branch for the APA.
The KPS has continued to advocate, educate, and provide other resources to its membership.
