Biographical sketch: Mary Shelly Ingalls was born February 18, 1919,in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Sheffield and Lucy Ingalls and the granddaughter of United State Senator John James Ingalls. She graduated from Atchison High School in May, 1936, attended Lindenwood College and received a teacher's elementary certificate from Ann Reno Institute, a B.S. degree with a major in Art Education from Wayne University in 1949, and later in 1963, a masters degree in elementary education from Arizona State University. Ingalls' career included working for the Detroit Board of Education as the head of war nurseries, the American Red Cross in Europe, supervisor and instructor for a camp for underprivileged children in Detroit, worked for a recreational center for underprivileged children, teenagers, and adults in Kansas City, Missouri, director for the Arizona Foundation for the Blind, part-time teacher for the visually handicapped in Mesa, Arizona, and later taught elementary school children at Edison School.

Scope and content: A scrapbook compiled by Mary Shelly Ingalls, granddaughter of United State Senator John James Ingalls, which documents her American Red Cross assignment in Europe. The scrapbook contains mementos and photographs from her time in Europe working with American soldiers. In addition, the collection contains photographs, correspondence, newsletters, newspaper articles, certificates, and school materials.
