Series 1: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION, 1915-1980

    This folder contains three versions of Evans’s biographical narrative in varying levels of detail with a small amount of biographical information about Kathleen and Elizabeth Evans, his wife and daughter respectively, as well.

    This folder contains a letter Evans wrote to the Winfield Board of Education upon his resignation from the superintendent position in Winfield, in which he details his achievements as the superintendent at Winfield as well as his reasons for taking the superintendent position in School District No. 110.

Series 5: GIFTS, 1950, 1966

  • Volumes 1-2—Scrapbooks (1950)

    This scrapbook, in two volumes, contains a compilation of letters and photos from the 120 honor students from the Winfield High School between the years of 1925 and 1949, presented to Evans upon his 25th year as an administrator of the Winfield Public School system on 16 March 1950.

  • Volume 3—Bound Book of Letters (1966)

    This book contains letters from educators across the nation, compiled and presented to Evans upon his retirement from the National Aerospace Education Council on 25 June 1966.

Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full):

Evan Elmer Evans was born September 8, 1896, in Carl Junction, Missouri, to David Griffiths and Alice Gardner Evans. After graduating from high school he taught eighth grade in Carl Junction, Missouri, from 1914-1915. He attended Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, from 1915 until 1917. In 1917-1918 he taught eighth and ninth grades in Stafford, Kansas. During World War I, Evans enlisted in a heavy artillery unit on May 17, 1918, and resigned C.A.O.T.S. at Fortress Monroe, Virginia, on November 23, 1918 at the rank of a sergeant. He reentered Baker University and obtained a bachelor of arts degree in 1920. After graduation, he was head of the mathematics department in Neodesha, Kansas, 1920-21. He served as principal at high schools in Cherryvale, Neodesha, and Winfield, Kansas. In 1928 he received a master of arts degree from the University of Chicago. He also received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Baker University in 1951. In addition to publishing articles in professional journals, Evans co-authored a book entitled Home Rooms: Organization, Administration and Activities with Malcolm Scott Hallman in 1930 (available in the Kansas Historical Society Library collection, call number 371.3 Ev15). Evans was superintendent of schools in Winfield from 1931 through 1952 and School District No. 110 in Overland Park from 1952 through 1955. He also taught summer sessions at Wichita University (present Wichita State University) and Kansas State College of Pittsburg (present Pittsburg State University).

Throughout his career, Evans participated in a number of professional organizations and committees, including but not limited to, the National Education Association, the Kansas State Principals Association, Governor Payne Ratner’s Commission of Education & National Defense, and the American Association of School Administrators. He also held leadership positions in various organizations, serving as chairman of the Winfield Civilian Defense Committee, chairman of the Civic Music Association in Winfield, president of the Kansas State Teachers Association, president of the Kansas Association of School Superintendents, chairman of the Kansas Commission on Aviation Education, and from 1955 through 1966 he served as the first executive director of the National Aerospace Council in Washington, D.C. Other achievements include receiving the Frank G. Brewer Trophy for outstanding contributions to aerospace education from the National Aeronautic Association in 1958, addressing the Centro per lo sviluppo dei Transporti Aerei in Rome in 1958, and serving as a delegate at the Federation Aeronautique Internationale in Moscow in 1959 and again in Israel in 1964.

He married Kathleen Clinton on June 9, 1921, and they had one daughter, Elizabeth Evans, on July 22, 1926. Evan Evans died on July 17, 1980, at age 83.

The Evan Elmer Evans collection contains biographical information, photos, newspaper clippings, correspondence, certificates, teacher contracts, programs, high school and college grades, biographical information, a two volume scrapbook with letters of congratulations and photographs from Winfield (Kansas) High School honor students, and one bound book with letters from colleagues and friends upon his retirement from the National Aerospace Education Council. It is arranged in five series:

Series 1—Biographical Information (1915-1980)

Consists of three folders, which include various forms of Evans’s biographical narrative (ca. 1950-1966), the contents of his personal binder listing his achievements through 1939, transcripts and report cards with Evans’s high school and college grades (1915-1918), and newspaper clippings (1928-1980).

Series 2—Correspondence (1917-1978)

Consists of two folders, which include letters to and copies of letters from Evans primarily related to his professional life.

Series 3—Photographs (ca. 1950-1966)

Consists of one folder of photographs primarily related to Evans’ professional life in the last decade of his career.

Series 4—Programs, Certificates, and Contracts (1913-1978)

Consists of three folders, which include programs from events at which Evans presented and participated, a number of certificates including teacher’s certificates, and Evans’s first teacher’s contract.

Series 5—Gifts (1950, 1966)

Consists of three volumes, which include a two-volume scrapbook presented to Evans upon his 25th anniversary as an administrator at the Winfield Public Schools (1950) and a bound book of letters presented to Evans upon his retirement from the National Aerospace Education Council (1966).
