Biographical sketch: Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks was born November 30, 1912 in Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Sarah and Jackson Parks. He was an American photographer, musician, composer, author, poet, and film director. Parks is best remembered for his photographic essays for Life magazine, his autobiographical novel and film The Learning Tree and as director of the film Shaft. Parks died March 7, 2006 and is buried in his hometown of Fort Scott, Kansas.
