Summary: This photograph shows the Manhattan, Kansas baseball team that won the 1947 championship in the Amateur Baseball League of America. The team won the title by defeating Beloit, 12-11, in the fifth game of the league?s playoffs. Seated in the front row are (l to r): Jack Rice; Pat Haggerty; Huck Heath (manager); Larry Gryskiewicz (first half manager); Earl Roemisch; Carl Lemon; and, John Peterman. In the middle row are (l to r): Jules Hudson; Harland Coffman; Bill Boner; Al Sheriff; Johnny Churchwell; Jack Bell; and, Les Wickham (business manager). In the back row are (l to r): Jack Custer; E.W. McAfee; Hal Haynes; Delos Smith; Ted Grimes; and, Perk Reitemeier. Batboy Sax Stone is seated in the front. The photo was published in the Manhattan Mercury-Chronicle on August 22, 1947. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
