Abstract: This collection contains record books of B'nai Jeshuren (also B'nai Jeshurun), the Conservative Jewish Congregation established in Leavenworth in 1859. The record book begins in 1863 and continues until 1868. The American Jewish Archives show that B'nai Jeshuren applied for a charter in 1864 which was five years after its initial formation. Most records for this congregation were destroyed in a fire and the congregation dissolved in the mid 1970s. Also in this collection are receipt books for the Jewish men's fraternity the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith, Sholem Lodge, No. 78. This order was established in Leavenworth in 1866 and was the first B'nai B'rith chapter in Kansas. Another item in this collection is a ledger book for the Sons of Truth, an organization which administered Mount Zion Cemetery. Records for both organizations cover the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to the Jewish records, this collection contains business ledgers for the Jacob Hait Furniture Company, 1892-1931. These records consist of bookkeeping ledgers and do not appear on the microfilm.

Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full):

Jacob Hait was born 22 August 1863 in Russia. He came to America in 1888 and apparently arrived in Leavenworth about 1891. He married Ida Wolfson (1876-1952) on 11 June 1893 in Jackson County, Missouri. Their children were Zelda Hait Winetroub (1894-1985), Josephine Hait Waldstein (1898-1984), and Lyle Graham Hait (1912-1962).

While in Leavenworth, Jacob Hait was a dealer in furniture, carpet, and second hand goods, a business that lasted until his death or shortly thereafter. It is assumed that Hait was a member of B'nai Jeshurun Congregation, though his name does not appear in any of the congregational records in this collection. He died 11 December 1930 and is buried in the Sons of Truth (Mount Zion) Cemetery in Leavenworth.

Scope and Content

Scope and content:

The collection contains record books of Congregation B'nai Jeshuren, also known as B'nai Jeshurun Temple or Synagogue, the Conservative Jewish congregation established in Leavenworth in 1859. The record book begins in 1863 and continues until 1868. The American Jewish Archives show that B'nai Jeshuren applied for a charter in 1864 which was five years after its initial formation. Most records for this congregation were destroyed in a fire and the congregation dissolved in the mid 1970s.

Also in this collection are receipt books for the Jewish men's fraternity, the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith, Sholem Lodge, No. 78. This order was established in Leavenworth in 1866 and was the first B'nai B'rith chapter in Kansas. Names in the book are presumably members. Another item in this collection is a ledger book for the Sons of Truth, an organization which administered Mount Zion Cemetery, the Jewish cemetery in Leavenworth. The receipt books presumably show purchasers of lots. Records for both organizations cover the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These items are valuable not only because of their rarity, but because they reveal the actions and decisions made by a significant ethnic group in Leavenworth, Kansas, during the time of its early history.

In addition to the Jewish organization records, the collection contains Jacob Hait's personal phone directories and bank books, both 1919-1934. Records for the Jacob Hait Furniture Company include receipt books, 1931, and ledgers, 1891-1931. These records do not appear on the microfilm.
