Biographical sketch: Charles Burrill Lines was born 12 March 1807 in New Haven, Connecticut. By trade a cabinet maker in connection with the undertaking business, Lines was a strong follower of the temperance movement, which helped him to a seat in the Connecticut Legislature at a time in American politics when he could interact with such individuals as John Quincy Adams, James Monroe, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson. He married in 1829, and he and his wife had nine children.

In 1856 after Kansas became a territory, Lines was one of the men who joined the Connecticut Kansas Colony, alternately known as the Beecher Bible and Rifle Company, individuals who wanted Kansas to become a free state of the Union. The colony located at Wabaunsee, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Lines spent the rest of his life in Kansas with his family and died at the age of 82 on 31 March 1889.

Abstract: The collection consists of Lines' 1858 and 1886 diaries, familial/personal and business correspondence to and from Lines for 1864-1874 and undated (bulk 1864-1867), an 1862 autobiographical sketch, and some miscellaneous materials such as legal documents, tax receipts, and receipts for railroad travel. The 1858 diary recounts Lines' journey east and back to Kansas, and the 1886 diary provides a daily account of Lines' life in Kansas, including a cash accounting in the back of the volume. In both diaries he refers to his wife as "Mrs. Lines," in the 1886 diary he refers to himself as "self."
